Quilting Basics - Design a Quilt Workshop with Laurelyn Gunn

Class Date: Monday, October 14

Time: 4pm - 8pm

Cost: $45

Do you have blocks laying around from a class ( Half Square Triangle Class), or that someone has "gifted" you and you don't know what to do with them?  Bring them to this Quilting Basic Workshop - "Design a Quilt Top". At this workshop we will get them from unfinished objects into something beautiful. Laurelyn will cover the following:

  • Step 1 - How do you choose a layout that works?

  • Step 2 - What are the rules of sashings?

  • Step 3 - Borders - when and why do I need an inner or outer border?

  • Step 4 - Tricks and Tools that will send you on your way to a completed table runner or quilt top.

NOTE:This class is designed to help you complete a table runner, baby blanket, or a throw size quilt top during this session. Projects larger than a throw size quilt need to be approved by Laurelyn prior to this class session.

SUPPLY LIST:

  • Pre- Made Quilt Blocks using quilt pattern of your choice

  • Additional Fabrics for making additional blocks

  • Coordinating fabrics to be used for sashing/borders

  • Sewing Machine in good working order

  • Accessories for your machine (bobbins, 1/4" foot, standard foot)

  • Sewing tool kit (pins, scissors, rotary cutter, seam ripper)

  • Thread (recommend Aurifil)

Design Your Quilting Layout & Quilt It!

JILL SCHUMACHER IS BACK AT WOODEN GATE!

In this 2 day workshop, Jill will be demonstrating the proper way to sandwich the three layers together to ensure a great finish to your quilt. As we all know, proper sandwiching is step one for a quality quilted finish!

Jill will be bringing her extensive collection of over 1,200 quilting stencils for you to use during the workshop to mark your quilts. On day 1 of the class you should be able to get your quilt sandwiched and marked, leaving day 2 for you to begin quilting with Jill's expertise.   WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY!!

BASIC SUPPLY LIST - Due to limited space - we ask that you limit your quilt top size to no larger than 60x70

DAY ONE:

  • A completed quilt top that is ready for marking & quilting 

  • Batting - batting should be 3 inches larger on each side of your quilt ( if your quilt measures 60x70 - batting needs to be 66x76)

  • Backing Fabric (backing should be the same exact size as your batting)

  • Marking Tools - water erasable blue & white markers (more than one of each is best)

  • Ruler for marking grid lines (3"x18" or 6"x24") either size will work

  • Safety Pins - #1 size safety pins LOTS of them!! (straight or curved)

DAY TWO:

  • Sewing Machine in good working order, instruction manual (your machine must be able to drop or cover the feed dogs)

  • Open Toe darning or quilting foot

  • Sewing machine extension table is really helpful

  • Thread to match your backing fabric (recommend Aurifil #50 weight)

  • Invisible Thread for doing ditch work

  • Machine needles ( Schmetz #70 Microtex Sharp)

  • Scissors for trimming seam

  • Your Quilt Sandwich from day one!

"Nick" - Collage the Laura Heine Way

Let’s get some Christmas cheer flowing as we create “Nick” by Laura Heine. Debi is a certified Instructor for Laura Heine collage technique and is enthusiastic to share the fun of collage with you. Gather up all of YOUR favorite and not so favorite Christmas fabrics (any size scraps will work) so you can build “Nick” and embellish the background to suit your holiday fancy!

TIME: 10am - 3pm each day

FEE: $75 + pattern and background fabric kit

LEVEL: Beginner

The class will be conducted over two days; Sunday September 22 & Sunday, September 29

September 22 - we will learn the difference of fusible products and their specific usage, trace our pattern, begin the fusible process of our fabrics and the underlay of backgrounds.

Homework - cut out all your motifs!

September 29 - You will have the entire class to create/design the collage your way.Most can complete the collage and be ready for quilting! (No pressure…we have drop-ins for those “more creative folks!)

  6. Goddess Applique Pressing Mat

  7. 4 yards - Steam-A-Seam 2

  8. 1 yard - Pattern Ease

** FABRIC KIT will be given out at Part 1. Fabrics in the WGQ kit are chosen from our fabric lines. Fabrics depicted in the pattern are what Laura used in making her sample.
